The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, accompanied by the Minister of FCT, Honourable Muhammadu Bello commissioned a new American space at the City Library in Abuja.
The American Space will host a variety of educational and cultural programs to empower young Nigerians with innovative and life changing programmes.
The space also houses a wide selection of English language learning tools, including extensive online databases and an e-library and will offer all services, programmes and resources to the public at no cost.
Ambassador Leonard noted that American Space programming focuses on English language learning and teacher training; Educational advising; Alumni networking; Cultural and outreach programmes; and sharing of Information about the United States.
She noted that the Public Affairs section of the US Mission in Nigeria is collaborating with twelve other institutions in Nigeria to host American Spaces in Abuja, Bauchi, Calabar, Ibadan, Jos, Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Maiduguri and Sokoto.
American Spaces exemplify the United States’s commitment to democracy and a citizen’s right to free access to information.  With over seven hundred spaces in one hundred and sixty nine countries worldwide, American Spaces provide welcoming environments where visitors can connect and learn about the United States.
