Dry Season Farming Panacea to Food Scarcity

Different seasons mean different things for different people. For the people at the upland this season is that of dry season while for the riverine areas, it is the peak of the farming season.

A visit to Anam in Anambra West Council Area of Anambra State, it was observed that farm crops are at different stages of growth. Some of the farms visited were newly cultivated and some crops like cassava, melon and potatoes are at different stages of germination .Some other farms have ridges for yam while the farmers have mounted sticks in readiness for staking the yam tendrils when they germinate.

Some farmers including Peter Obi who said they usually start planting early so as to harvest early to avert possible flooding that often occurs between the months of July and August .He commended the Anambra State government efforts at improving agriculture in the state but solicited more interventions to enable farmers access loan directly from various facilities .

Another farmer, Mrs. Ekene Augustine expressed satisfaction with Anambra State government’s gesture in providing improved seeding to them thereby, ensuring a bumper harvest.
