The maiden edition of the Annual Science Festival organized by the Ministry of Education, Imo State, has ended, with Girls Secondary School, Akwakuma,  Handmaids Holy Child Juniorate, Amaumara, Ezinihitte Mbaise, and Living Word Academy, Nkerre emerging overall winners.The Grand-finale of the academic competition which comprised of Quiz, Debate and Scientific Innovation/Exhibition, was held at Government Secondary School, Owerri.
Present at the programme were: Barr Uche Onyeaguocha, Secretary to the Imo State Government, Hon Philip Ejiogu, Chairman, House Committee on Education, dignitaries from all walks of life Students, teachers and staff of the Ministry of Education.Prizes of both cash and presents were given to First, Second and Third winners of the Science Festival by the Ministry of Education in order to encourage academic excellence and hardwork among students.

The competition was conducted transparently, whereby answer scripts were marked at the venue of the programme shortly after the test; results announced  and prizes awarded to successful students, according to the Commissioner of Education, Prof Mrs Viola Adaku Onwuliri who was represented by Mrs. Ebeliri Patricia, Director in the Ministry of Education.
The Commissioner noted that “across the 27 local government areas of Imo State, 595 students drawn from 204 public and private Secondary Schools have burnt their midnight candles, trying to make it to the grand-finale. In the same vein, over 297 Science Textbooks in Physics, Biology, Chemistry have been given out as prizes to students”.She added that the competition passed through several stages; from the LGA, Zonal and Pre-State levels to the grand-finale.

Stressing that the academic competition was in line with Governor Emeka Ihedioha’s vision for a youth -friendly led science and technology driven economy where job opportunities, wealth generation and entrepreneurship will thrive, Professor Onwuliri stated that the Imo Annual Science Festival is a programme designed by the Ministry of Education and  “aimed at stimulating and fostering grassroots participation of Imo children in Science activities such as quiz, debate and exhibition; thereby eliminating the phobia for Science subjects and increasing desire for the study of Science”.
