GOVERNOR IKPEAZU ADVOCATES EQUITY AND JUSTICE AT PEACE SUMMIT
The Governor of Abia State, Dr. OkezieIkpeazu has called on our leaders to be just and equitable.
The governor made the call during the one day peace summit organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA),Abia State, in collaboration with the Abia State Government.
The governor who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Ude Okochukwu commended the agency for organizing the summit noting that the present situation of the country makes it very timely as there is no alternative to peace in any society.
DrIkpeazu stated that for the country to move forward as a people, the leaders have to recognize that they are leaders. He however regretted that most of our leaders are insensitive of their actions and inactions. He stated further that when a leader encourages marginalization, nepotism and do not balance appointments, it creates tension among the subjects.
The Governor also mentioned that the country is bedeviled with vices like armed robbery, kidnapping, economic challenges, poverty and unemployment. He however urged that government at all levels should provide employment to be able to address these challenges positively.
Governor Ikpeazu therefore called on leaders at all levels in the country to be careful in voicing out how they feel in anger to avoid tension in the society. He also urged the resource persons to propose solutions to the challenges identified as clogs in the wheels of progress of the country.
In his own address, the chairman of the occasion, who is also the chairman of the State’s Scholarship Board; Ambassador Empire Kanustated that the country is seriously in need of peace as“we are faced with challenges threatening our foundation as one indivisible entity”.
He stated that security challenges such as Boko Haram, Farmer/herders clashes, banditry, cattle rustling, kidnapping and armed robbery in all parts of the country; ethnic and religious clashes and even separatist agitation indicates that all is not well with the country and she is in need of peace.ou
He therefore called on rapporteurs to initiate modalities for policy formulation that will bring lasting peace in the country. to the execution and promotion of peace.
Also speaking the National Director of NOA represented by the Anambra State director, Chief Charles EdozieNwoji noted that all over the world peace is necessary for social development adding that for a society to continue to grow in a beneficial and sustainable manner, peace is highly needed. He stressed that any society devoid of peace is sure not to develop and attain its full potentials and therefore experience under development. He thanked the governor for allowing the summit in the state.
In her welcome speech, the state director of National Orientation Agency,Abia State, Lady Mrs.NgoziOkechukwu opined that social inequality, economic exclusion, marginalization, political and religious intolerance and struggle for scarce resources are causes of conflicts in the country.
